Donald
Trump revealed Monday night that New England Patriots quarterback Tom
Brady and the NFL football team’s coach, Bill Belichick, had voted for
him.
The
Republican nominee made the declaration while campaigning in
Manchester, N.H., a state that favors the Boston-based Patriots.
“Tom
Brady. Great guy. Great guy. Great guy. Great friend of mine,” Trump
began. “Great, great champion. Unbelievable winner. He called today, and
he said, ‘Donald, I support you. You’re my friend. And I voted for
you.’ And I want to tell you, this guy is a champ. And he’s a winner.
And he’s a great person.”
He
continued, “So I said, ‘So Tom, you voted for me. You support me. Am I
allowed to say to to this massive crowd in New Hampshire? He said, ‘If
you want to say it, you can say it. OK?’ Tom. That’s what a champ’s all
about.”
But in Brady’s weekly spot on WEEI’s “Kirk and Callahan” radio show
on Monday morning, the star quarterback said that he not yet cast a
ballot. “I haven’t voted yet,” Brady said. “I’m not sure if I’m going to
today or tomorrow.” He said he would reveal whom he voted for next week
on the show. Early voting ended in Massachusetts on Friday, according
to the Boston Globe.
At Trump’s Manchester rally, the candidate also read a letter that he said Belichick had given him.
“Congratulations
on a tremendous campaign. You have dealt with an unbelievable, slanted
and negative media and have come out beautifully. Beautifully. You have
proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Your leadership is
amazing,” he read out loud about himself. “Hopefully, tomorrow’s
election’s results will give the opportunity to make America great
again. Best wishes for great results tomorrow, Bill Belichick,” he
continued.
Trump has long touted his relationship with Brady, a golfing buddy who at times strained to stay out of tense presidential politics. But Brady has also hinted that he’s a Trump supporter, and said last year that he had one of the celebrity businessman’s campaign hats in his locker.
