AFCON qualifier

After starting out rather poorly in their quest for qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup Nations, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be aiming for their first win in the series away to Seychelles on Saturday.

Only the three points against the Pirates on Saturday will be good for the Eagles to restore their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track following the reverse against South Africa in Uyo on Matchday 1 in June 2017.

While the build-up to Saturday’s game has been dominated with some high-profile withdrawals and injury setbacks, there are still no tenable excuses for the Super Eagles not to beat their host in the Match Day 2 tie.

Having missed out on two successive editions of the AFCON in 2015 and 2017, a hat trick of misses would indeed spell doom for all- players, coaches and also the administrators.

The Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr knows he and his players must deliver and has given assurances that they would.

He said: “Everyone realizes the importance of this match. We are currently number three in our group and that position does not befit Super Eagles of Nigeria. It is not good for us because it is outside the qualification range.

“The players know this. They know that on Saturday they have to show character to put our campaign back on track with a good result.”
